CURRICULAR STRUCTURE

The Postgraduate Program in the Study of Languages/PPGEL offers the Masters and Doctoral courses in the Study of Languages. It is structured in an Area of Concentration called “Languages: practices and contexts” to which two Research Lines are linked: 1) Reading, Literature and Culture and 2) Languages, Discourse and Society.

The Master’s Course in Language Study lasts 24 months, corresponding to 04 academic semesters. During this period, 35 credits must be paid, upon completion of mandatory disciplines and activities:

  1. a) Compulsory Subjects (17 credits, including credits from Research Seminars I and II).

b) Optional Subjects (06 credits)

c) Mandatory Activities, 12 credits, distributed between:

– Complementary Academic Activities (02 credits), credit to be obtained by the Master’s student between the 2nd. and the 3rd. Course semesters, through participation in extracurricular academic activities.

–  Guided Research (08 credits), on the 3rd. and 4th. semesters of the course.

Qualification Exam (without crediting), to be completed on the 4th. semester of the course, until the last working day of the month of October.

For the purposes of the Qualification Examination, the master’s student must have fulfilled the credit for the mandatory and optional subjects, the Complementary Academic Activities and the Supervised Teaching Internship and have passed the Oriented Research curriculum component of the 3rd. semester.

– Public Defense of Dissertation (without crediting)

For purposes of Public Defense of Dissertation, the master’s student must have passed the Oriented Research curricular component, offered in the 4th. School semester.

The Doctoral Course in the Study of Languages lasts 48 months, corresponding to 08 academic semesters. During this period, a minimum of 53 credits must be paid in, upon completion of mandatory and optional subjects and mandatory activities:

  1. a) Mandatory Subjects (16 credits).

b) Optional Subjects (06 credits)

c) Mandatory Activities, 31 credits, distributed between:

– Complementary Academic Activities (05 credits), credit to be obtained by the doctoral student between the 2nd. and the 6th. semesters of the Course, through participation in extracurricular academic activities.

Supervised Teaching Internship (02 credits), with two semesters being completed by the scholarship holders, in accordance with the regulations of the development agency, and 01 semester for masters with degrees in the last 02 years.

– Oriented Research (24 credits), and 06 semesters of this component must be completed, between the 3rd. and the 8th. semesters of the course.

For the purposes of the Qualification Exam, to be held on the 5th. semester, 35 credits must be paid up to the 4th. semester, upon compliance with the mandatory and optional Disciplines and Mandatory Activities:

  1. a) Mandatory Subjects (16 credits).

b) Optional Subjects (06 credits).

c) Mandatory Activities (13 credits): Complementary Academic Activities (3 credits), Guided Research (8 credits) and Supervised Teaching Internship (2 credits).

– Public Thesis Defense (without crediting)

For purposes of Public Defense of the Thesis, another 18 credits must be fulfilled, until the 8th. semester, upon fulfillment of the following Mandatory Activities

  1. 1. Complementary Academic Activities (02 credits).
  2. 2. Oriented Research (16 credits).
