PRESENTATION
POST-GRADUATE PROGRAM IN STUDY OF LANGUAGES
The Post-graduate Program in Study of Languages/PPGEL, linked to the Department of Human Sciences of Campus I of the State University of Bahia, is based in the city of Salvador/Bahia. Recommended by CAPES (Official Letter No. 602-11/2005/CTC/CAPES–09/19/2005), it was implemented in 2006, offering the Master’s Course. In the evaluation of the 2013-2016 quadrennium, it achieved grade 4, obtaining, in 2020, the approval of the Doctoral Course. Recommended by CAPES and recognized by the Ministry of Education through Ordinance 997, of 11/23/2020, published in the Federal Official Gazette. of 11/24/2020, the Doctorate starts in 2021.
Master´s Degree
The Masters in Study of Languages, in the academic and classroom modality, lasts 24 months, corresponding to 04 academic semesters. During this period, for the purpose of obtaining the title of Master, 35 credits must be obtained, upon fulfillment of the following curricular components: a) Mandatory Subjects in the area and in the Research Line; b) Optional Subjects; c) Mandatory Activities, comprising: Complementary Academic Activities, Supervised Teaching Internship, Guided Research, Qualification Exam and Dissertation Defense. The Qualification Exam and the Defense of the Dissertation will be held before an examining board, in a public session.
Doctorate Degree
The Doctorate in Study of Languages, in the academic and classroom modality, lasts 48 months, corresponding to 08 academic semesters. During this period, for the purpose of obtaining the title of Doctor, a minimum of 53 credits must be obtained, upon fulfillment of a) Mandatory Subjects; b) Optional Subjects; c) Mandatory Activities, including: Complementary Academic Activities, Supervised Teaching Internship, Guided Research, Qualification Exam and Thesis Defense. The Qualification Exam and Thesis Defense will be held before an examining board, in a public session.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
The Program is structured in an Area of Concentration, called “Languages: practices and contexts”. The investigative proposal of the chosen Area privileges the study of language practices, in their different contexts, which constitute experiences, meanings and values of identities that are expressed, above all, on the margins of the dominant culture. This Area is articulated in 02 Research Lines: 1) Reading, Literature and Culture and 2) Languages, Discourse and Society. Based on their specific theoretical assumptions, these Lines propose a reflection on the plurality of languages, on the understanding that this is a requirement for teacher education in the field of Letters and teaching practice.
Research Line Reading, Literature and Culture
Summary – The production of knowledge that articulates Reading, Literature and Culture challenges researchers to immediately face the problem of an epistemological nature that has historically sustained a production that is now consecrated and legitimized by the field of literature. Alongside this confrontation, it should bring out dislocations of discourses that embrace the diversity of productions that were on the margins of what the aesthetics of modernity defined as literary and artistic. From this perspective, reading/reception activities occupy a privileged space for recognizing the multiplicity of cultural expressions, which bring the marks of their borders and transits that operate in the alterity process. Through this lens, the research line in Reading, Literature and Culture privileges the study of literary productions and productions of marginalized and disqualified languages in relation to hegemonic cultural practices. It investigates the trajectories of reading from a sociological, representational and aesthetic perspective of reception.
Research Line Languages, Discourse and Society
Summary – The challenge posed to produce knowledge that relates Languages, Discourse and Society implies the problematization of the classic assumptions about the relationship between language, language and discourse and points out clues for advancing the understanding of this complex relationship, which is not restricted to the transmission of messages, but, above all, it involves the control, selection and reorganization of power in society. Thus, this research line includes projects in the area of rhetorical studies and argumentative processes, from the perspective of discourse analysis, discursive practices and linguistic diversity, having as a common horizon the vision of language as a practice that involves social actors, in discursive interaction, and the group to which they belong.
The Postgraduate Program in the Study of Languages aims to provide subsidies for studies on languages, providing conditions for planning and carrying out investigations in this area, with a view to preparing researchers to advance their research. In this sense, the PPGEL establishes its specific objectives, in order to contribute to the graduate’s profile: a) provide the exchange of students in other HEIs, national and foreign, through study missions, research, participation in scientific events. b) integrate students into regional, national and international research networks. c) encourage the publication of academic works by students in qualified vehicles, with national and international coverage. d) Encourage the participation of graduate students in extracurricular activities and scientific events promoted by communities outside the university.
The proposal for the creation of PPGEL emerged from the history of the State University of Bahia, an institution created in 1983, and with authorization to operate in 1986, being responsible, by legal definition, for taking higher education to regions in the interior of the state of Bahia and assume the training of teachers for elementary and high school, thus marking their social insertion in the regional scope. Structured in a multicampi format, this HEI is present in important medium and large cities in Bahia, headquartered in Salvador. There are 26 campuses, 01 in the capital and 25 in the interior of the state, in different micro-regions and territories of identity, covering distances ranging from 100 to 850 km from the Central Administration, which is in the capital of Bahia. On these campuses, approximately 26 Licentiate Degree Courses in Letters are distributed. Always following social demands, in accordance with its Institutional Development Plan/PDI, UNEB also assumes other forms of intervention in education in Bahia, establishing partnerships with the State Education Department and those of several municipalities, in training programs for teachers who work in Basic Education, and with the federal government
The social insertion of PPGEL also stands out in different aspects. Initially, because of the profile of candidates for the selection process for Regular Student, for which graduates from campuses in the interior of the state of Bahia, installed in needy regions of the postgraduate education system, apply. Social inclusion has been expanded since the implementation of the Program, which follows the affirmative action policy of UNEB. In its public notice for the selection process for Regular Student, following a specific Resolution of the University Council of this HEI, the Program reserves 40% of vacancies for candidates who declare themselves black, and a percentage of 10% of vacancies is reserved for indigenous, quilombola, gypsy candidates, transsexuals, transvestites, transgender people and people with autism spectrum disorders or high abilities.
INTERINSTITUTIONAL EXCHANGES
Since its implementation, the Program has provided its professors and graduate students with academic experiences with other educational and research institutions, in order to expand the opportunities for a distinct and renewing quality education in the production of knowledge, in its dissemination and in the creation of new academic research networks, in order to contribute to the contemporary challenges of doing science. Thus, with the aim of promoting inter-institutional dialogues, PPGEL seeks to cross multiple borders – geographical, ethnic, cultural, national and international – in the field of language studies, strengthening ongoing inter-institutional partnerships, expanding cooperation agreements and welcoming graduate students and researchers from other HEIs and national and foreign research centers.
GRADUATE PROFILE
The profile of graduates from an academic program is that of a professional and researcher who, based on the objectives proposed by the Program, critically dominates the theoretical foundations of the area of languages, in response to the challenges posed by the propositions of their Research Lines. This professional should be able to continue research and able to work in teaching, in Basic Education or at a higher level, contribute with language policy proposals, as well as work in different spheres of the literary and cultural field. In this sense, aiming at a qualified training of human resources, the graduate must be able to: critically dominate the theoretical-methodological assumptions of language studies, in an interdisciplinary perspective; contribute to the proposition of new epistemological questions for the construction of innovative critical thinking in language studies, in the institutional, regional and national context; promote renewed interventions with social impact in the field of their professional performance, in formal and non-formal spaces of education and form scientific and academic research networks with researchers within the scope of UNEB, Programs and national and international HEIs.
SELECTIVE PROCESS
The public selection process for Regular Student takes place annually, with disclosure through a Notice published in the Official Gazette of the state of Bahia and on the Program’s website. To enter the courses, candidates are required, upon registration, to have an undergraduate degree, for the Master’s, and a Master’s degree, for the Doctorate. Foreign candidates must present, upon registration, the diploma validated according to specific legislation in Brazil and the certificate of approval in the Portuguese Language Proficiency Examination (CELPE-BRAS), and should also consult Resolution/CONSU/UNEB nº. 1.315/2018, which regulates the offer of vacancies and conditions for entry of foreign students in its postgraduate programs. Course Completion works, theses or dissertations must be written in Portuguese, in accordance with the standard and current norms established by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards/ABNT. The Program also carries out selection for Special Student, every six months, with disclosure in a public notice in the Official Gazette of the state of Bahia.
